Jute Workers strike struggle
2.5 lakh Jute workers of West Bengal went on indefinite strike on 14th December, 2009 demanding implementation of previous tripartitite agreements with the owners and the government, as well as payment of Dearness Allowance in context of rising prices. The strike of the workers essentially was to call attention of the governnment and the people to the violation of all agreements and labour laws by the Jute mill owners. Twenty trade Unions organising amongst the jute workers gave the call for the strike. When reports last came in (on December 24), the strike was carryiong on and was total.
