Anganwadi workers rally

Thousands of Anganwadi workers and helpers marched through the streets of Delhi to parliament to press for their just demands.

Their demands include universalisation of the Integrated Child Development Service Scheme and the corrsponding increase of Anganwadi centers all over the country. The Anganwadi workers are demanding that every Anganwadi center should be provided with pucca building, water and toilet facility, storage space for the food items, and playground for the children. They are demanding that they be recognised as full time government employees, also be given pension benefit, and monthly wages of Rs 5,000 for Anganwadi Workes and Rs 3,500 for helpers. The rallyists also demanded health care benefits as well as housing.

Anganwadi workers and helpers have close relationship with the people. Their primary responsibility is to provide supplementary nutrition to women and children and early childhood care. They also work closely with frontline workers of health and family welfare for ensuring immunization and ante-natal check-ups. Their actual work load is greatly increased because various government departments use their services for the implementation of other programs as well. Despite this, they are not recognised as government employees. At present they are getting an honorarium of Rs 1,000 for the workers, and Rs 500 for the helpers. Even the meagre increase in this announced by the UPA government in 2008 is not being implemented.

The protesting Anganwadi workers and helpers were organised under the banner of the All India Anganwadi Workers Federation. People's Voice supports the just struggle of the Anganwadi workers.
