Satyam case – merely the tip of the iceberg?

Sir,

I am writing to thank you for the article entitled "The Satyam case reveals the rottenness of the capitalist system."  It is a timely article, as there is much confusion being sowed in the public mind as regard what the case is really about.  It is repeatedly stated that the system in India is perfectly capable of satisfying all the needs of its population, and it is only a few bad apples that are bringing the system into disrepute. All facts point to the contrary:

the system is one that encourages grabbing at any cost, and hookwinking and covering up. Nothing succeeds like success, it is only a loser that gets caught. The article explains to the working class that this is not the case. The system is one that is based on the outright sucking of the blood and sweat of the workers. Whosoever is capable of leveraging the system to become the bloodsucker is the successful one. One wonders what other scandals will come to light.  It is well known that the IT sector which is portrayed as the great success story in the country is completely unstable, that it has come to the fore only because of vast sops given to the industry in terms of cheap land, tax holidays, exemption from even the laws on the books. It is well known that the private airline industry is also beset with problems --- despite large numbers of sops given to this industry, it is fraught with mergers and takeover, bankruptcies and crises. It shows a flagrant disregard for the rights of labour, as evidenced by the recent firings of workers by Jet, which was reversed only due to strident protest by various sections of the working class. Enquiring minds would like to know what is the source of capital and funds of all these players.

It would not be surprising if behind every single big player in India there is a history of duplicity, treachery and fraud. Let not the working class be lulled into thinking that problems with the system is only due to some cheats and that it can be fixed to serve the needs of all.

Sincerely,
S. Nair, Kochi
