Jan Jagruti Abhiyaan campaign develops in Mumbai
People’s Voice has reported earlier about the campaign launched by the Jan Jagruti Abhiyan (Peopels awakening campaign) launched jointly by working class and working peoples organisations in Maharashtra to unite the working masses in defence of their rights, against the efforts of the state and various bourgeois political parties to organise divisions amongst them. This Abhiyan was launched in Mumbai in November 2008 in the wake of concerted attacks on migrant workers from UP and Bihar.
The message of the campaign is simple and direct. The working class needs to reject the poisonous propaganda of the bourgeoisie, that unemployment in Mumbai and Maharashtra is due to workers from other states coming here. It is the capitalist system which is responsible for unemployment and the miseries of the working people. With this message, the Abhiyan has carried out mass campaign in various working class colonies of Mumbai.
On Sunday, February 8th, the campaign was carried out in Khar Railway Colony, with nearly 50 activists participating. Many of them were women residing in Khar Railway Colony and surrounding areas, who had been mobilized by Maharashtra Ghar Kamgar Molkarni Sanghathan. There were also activists of Lok Raj Sangathan, Kamgar Ekta Chalwal, CPI, Republican Panthers and Prerna. Before the start of the procession a lively street play was put up, which denounced the attempts of the US imperialists to instigate war between India and Pakistan. After this the procession left the colony and marched through the crowded lanes of Khar (E) explaining to the working people the bourgeoisie's game of divide and rule, and the need for working class to unite around its own concerns. There was vigorous discussion amongst the people over the issues raised. People's Voice hails this important initiative of Jan Jagruti Abhiyaan.
