What is behind the racist violence in Australia?
Tens of thousands of youth have come on to the streets of towns and cities across India, as well as in many cities in countries around the world and in Australia itself, out to protest against the inhuman racist attacks against students of Indian origin in Australia.
While shedding crocodile tears about their plight, the officials of the Indian government have issued directives asking the students to “stay calm”, “be unobtrusive” and “assimilate in the mainstream” and so on, thus virtually laying the blame for the attacks on the victims themselves. On the other hand, there is also the idea which is propagated that it is the youth of Australia who are the villains of the piece, refusing to welcome students from across the seas in their midst and tormenting them with racial violence instead.
Both these viewpoints have the effect of increasing the divisions between youth of different national origins. They obscure the fact that racial violence across the globe, and in the present case in Australia too, has its origin in the capitalist system, which seeks to keep the youth and working people of all countries divided, at loggerheads with each other, preventing them from effectively fighting for the rights of all youth to health, education, jobs and a bright future. This allows the capitalist system and the powers that be to escape the wrath of the youth, whose capacity and willingness to fight against injustice and for a better world for all has been legendary throughout history.
In the present situation where the capitalist system is caught in one of the most severe crises in centuries, racist attacks and sectarian violence and fostering divisions based on race, language, national origin and religion are the preferred policies of the ruling circles in many capitalist countries from France to Australia, and from Canada to China.
Peoples’ Voice / MEL joins the millions of youth and working people around the globe in severely condemning the racist violence and calls upon the youth to ally with the working class, the only class which is capable of smashing the capitalist system which is the source of racist violence and many other scourges. Come, let us organize to fight for a better world in which the rights of youth and toiling people all over are upheld and their aspirations for a better future can truly be met!
