Bosch Limited workers organize successful 72-day strike

The Mico Bosch Labour Union (MBLU) concluded a successful 72-day unbroken strike on 20 January 2009. The management had to accept the workers' demands and an agreement was signed, according to which, the management has agreed to regularize all the trainees at the conclusion of their probation period, and a hike in salary for every worker by Rs.1200 per month.

The manufacturing plant of Bosch Limited was established in 1998 in the industrial area of Jaipur, Rajsathan. The Mico Bosch Labour Union (MBLU) was registered as a union on 16 March 2005. The workers signed their first wage agreement on 10 August 2005, effective till 1 June 2009, under which they gained a monthly salary increase of Rs. 3800.

1100 workers from the plant are members of the union. There is only one union in this plant, which is affiliated with AITUC, and most of the workers are in the age group of 18 to 30 years and are militant and politically conscious. Immediately after the registration of their union, they organized a grand cultural programme to celebrate the martyrdom day of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Since then they have been celebrating May day and Martyrs day regularly every year. They also organize a discussion on 5 May to mark the birthday of Karl Marx.

Members of this union also played a significant role in establishing many other unions in the industrial area.

As part of their continuing struggle for their rights, the MBLU mobilized more than 5000 workers for the all India industrial strike called by AITUC on 29 September 2005. The police, at the instructions of the local industrialists, attacked the workers with lathis, water canon and rubber bullets. They arrested hundreds of workers and spread terror amongst them. They succeeded in breaking up many unions. But the struggle of Mico Bosch Labour Unions kept the flame burning. The union persisted in its struggle through discussion amongst the workers about their exploitation. On 1 February the ownership of the Mico Bosch Company, which was a subsidiary, went into the hands of Bosch, the multinational company. Bosch company has four plants in India. When the management declared that all Bosch employees will be given benefits, the workers of this plant also put forward their demands.

In the meantime the management started implementing a new policy of removing the trainees, who had completed two years, and were due to be absorbed on probation.

This was contrary to the normal practice; the management brought in a new policy through which it will get the desired number of workers, without having to regularize them.

Soon after the elections of the office bearers on 8 October 2008, the Union intensified the struggle. On 12 October the Union unanimously decided to go on an indefinite strike for their demands and served notice to the management. But the company declared the strike as illegal and used force to against the striking workers.

On 5 December the labour department also banned the strike and from 12 December the company declared a partial lockout in the company. The Union sent memoranda to the Labour Minister, cabinet secretary, department of Labour and Unemployment and to the Chief Minister against this illegal action by the management.

Finally at the intervention of the AITUC leader comrade Gurudas Dasgupta the Labour department organized a meeting for discussion.

In the meantime in order to bring pressure on the striking workers the management brought in workers from other plants, and hired armed goons from Haryana to threaten the workers. They also brought in dogs. But despite all these efforts, the management could not succeed in breaking the unity and confidence of the young workers.

The Union declared that this success will be an inspiration to the workers to continue their struggles in the context of the prevailing conditions of economic recession.
