As per the press reports Tanakpur-Bageshwar Rail Nirman Sangharsh Samiti has been agitating for construction of rail route for Tanakpur-Bageshwar, Hrishikesh-Karnaprayag, Ramnagar-Chaukhutiya, and Tanakpur-Jauljeevi stretches.

As is well known the mountainous regions of Uttarakhand are extremely difficult to travel because of the topography. The extreme backwardness of the region and its lack of livelihood opportunities forces many people to migrate to other areas and states.

The Sangarsh Samiti has been continuously agitating in favour of the people's demands, including organizing demonstrations and going on indefinite hunger strike. It organised a "Jail Bharo Andolan" on October 7, 2009 and also a "rally" in Tanakput-Bageshwar.  They also went on a hunger strike in Delhi from November 9-19, 2009. At the end of the fast, the delegation also met Manmohan Singh and handed over a petition of their demands.
