Army takes front seat in Arunachal Pradesh

According to news reports, the Union government has decided to set up a unified command structure in the state of Arunachal Pradesh to "combat insurgency". General officer commanding of the army's Four Corps based in Assam's northern town of Tezpur Lt. Gen BS Jaswal would command the operations. Former army chief and presently Arunachal Pradesh Governor Gen. (Retd) JJ Singh is believed to be the architect behind the Unified Command.

A unified command structure is already in place in Assam. What it means is that while there is a nominal civil government, actual power vests with the army. The army and police are integrated into one command structure under army control. The armed forces carry out rape and murder in the name of countering insurgency. They also set up various armed groups themselves to terrorise the people. The people of Assam, Kashmir and some other North-Eastern states have had bitter experience of the untrammelled lawlessness of the armed forces under so called civilian rule. The signs are not good for the people of Arunachal Pradesh.

According to the government, there is no insurgency in Arunachal Pradesh. However, it claims that insurgent groups from Assam and Nagaland are using the jungles of Arunachal as their hideouts.

People's Voice calls upon people to resolutely oppose stepped up state terrorism in Arunachal Pradesh in name of counter insurgency.
