Poor Secularism

Dear Sir

The workers and peasants of India are no more surprised that in the present political process and political system, the parties that commit genocide get elected. The latest example is that of Narendra Modi again coming to power in Gujarat. Earlier in 1984 Congress Party under Rajeev Gandhi, rode to power after committing genocide of innocent, where thousands of Sikhs men we killed, women and girls were raped.

The experience since independence and more particularly since 1980’s has been that communal and criminal parties alone can come to power. Even the CPI(M) in West Bengal uses the same tricks to remain in power, as Congress and BJP.

One can only pity the leftists, who have been tailing the Congress over the past five years and chanting “secularism”, the word they borrowed from the British colonialists, and now have to see their arch rival BJP coming to power. During the Gujarat election it was quite surprising to see leftists arguing that all secular forces must ally with Congress, and not put their own candidates, as it would lead to splitting of secular (Congress) vote.

The aim of this line put forward by the Parliamentary leftists and “secular intellectuals” is to rally the workers and peasants behind the “lesser evil” Congress. In other words it is bourgeoisie reactionary politics, which say that to defeat one enemy, join hands with the other enemy. This “line” is one of betrayal of workers and peasants of this country.

Through this letter I wish to convey a few things to these leftists. First, differentiating between Congress and BJP just for the sake of some crumbs of power is nothing but foolishness. Second, we must attack the present political process that only enables those parties to come to power who have committed crimes against the people. Third, the Indian state is communal and not the people. Fourth, this kind of bourgeoisie reactionary politics is not in the interest of workers and peasants. And fifth, we must all work towards establishing the rule of workers and peasants and not rule of the political parties.

Sincerely
Mansoor Ali
