Condemn arrest of rights activist by Assam police
People's Voice condemns the arrest of journalist and rights activist Shri Lachit Bordoloi by the Assam police on February 10, 2008.
Lachit Bordoloi is the advisor of the Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS), an organization that has been in the forefront of exposing rights violations by the armed forces in Assam. Shri Bordoloi is also the convenor of the People's Committee for Peace Initiatives in Assam, and a member of the People's Consultative Group (PCG) that was set up in September 2005 to initiate discussions between the Government of India and the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA).
According to reports, Guwahati police raided Bordoloi's flat in Guwahati, where his wife and daughter were staying alone, on the night of February 9, 2008. He had left earlier the day for a meeting in Tinsukhia district. Later, information was received that he had been picked up by the police at Moranghat while he was driving back. He has been charged with trying to hijack a plane.
The arrest of Bordoloi is part of the assault of the Indian state on all those who dare to expose the violation of human rights being carried out by the armed forces of the state. People's Voice demands the immediate release of Bordoloi.
