The 1908 Stike – in today's context
Sir,
I would like to join the party in the remembrance of the historic strike action of Indian working class of 1908. This was the watershed event that laid the foundation for the birth of working class consciousness.
The question that confronted the working class in the year 1908 poses itself in a different form today, as the world has changed considerably in these last one hundred years.
Some questions posed themselves in very sharp relief in 1908: was it not obvious that British Rule in India was imposed upon the people of India through extreme violence after the crushing of the great uprising of 1857? If that was indeed the case, was it not just that such rule should be overthrown and replaced by something different.
The question that we need to pose today is the following: is it not obvious that the rule of the big bourgeoisie in India is a continuation of the tradition of British colonial rule? Is it not so that this rule is one that is responsible for the immiseration of India's billions and fattening of a small ruling elite? Is it not so that the rule of the bourgeoisie in India over these nearly 61 years has been also through the rule of the bullet and the baton, with the ballot being a mere cover? If so, should we not say that this rule be replaced by something else? One in which the people of India can lead a human life, of dignity and security?
The working class is the class that has the ability to lead the rest of our working people towards this goal. Communists must be at the forefront of this discussion and be the instrument in the hands of the working class to this aim. In this regard, the CGPI has been at this frontier and I am sure that our work will continue with greater vigour.
Sincerely,
A. Narayan,Bangalore
