The working class has to lead the struggle for social change
Dear Editor,
The article in the July1 -15, 2008 issue of People’s Voice on the heroic strike of Mumbai workers against the colonial rule was very inspiring. What we read as a line in the history of India’s freedom struggle in school actually is a very significant event in the history of working class struggle of our country. The year 1908 appears to be the turning point in the political landscape of our country.
The article clearly highlighted how things can change when working class comes to the centre stage of any struggle. For real social change to occur it’s the working class that needs to lead the struggle. No force is mightier than the grit and will of struggling people.
What struck me too was 100 years have gone by and the struggle for people’s rule, to end a society based on exploitative system of capitalism, still continues. What an irony that in today’s “Independent India” the means and mechanism for suppressing people’s struggle remain the same as during colonial ti mes!
We, as Indian citizens need to carry the struggle for true freedom of our Society, to establish a communist society as militantly as the working class did 100 years ago. This would be the best tribute to our martyrs.
Sincerely
Usha, Hyderabad
