Communist School on Indian Communist Movement held in Mumbai

A two-day Communist School was held in Mumbai on June 15 and June 22, 2008 to discuss different trends in the Indian Communist Movement. The first session was held in Central Mumbai and two presentations; one on Social Systems and another one on the Communist Party of India, were made. In the second session, which was held in the Western suburb of Ville Parle, another three presentations were made on the topics of Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Ghadar Party of India and on Mao Tse Tung thought. All the presentations were prepared by Communist Ghadar Party of India and dealt with both general line of these parties as well as with their programs.

Participants included comrades of the Communist Ghadar Party of India and several other communist groups, trade union activists, women's activists and youth activists. Youth had come not only  from near by areas like Dharavi and Central Mumbai but also from as far away as Ulhasnagar and Jogeshwari.

A very lively discussion ensued during and after the presentations where issues of the nature of Indian state, plans of the Indian ruling class, need for unity and independent political activities of the working class, Women's Reservation Bill, the continuation of the British colonial legacy after the transfer of power, and many more were debated. There was a serious atmosphere of learning and teaching that prevailed in these sessions and everyone felt free to raise their questions and comments during the discussion. Many questions in which initially there were conflicting views, led to unity of thought after the discussion.

The importance of such discussion amongst communists was well appreciated. The youth from Dharavi wanted to have more presentations on other communist parties also and the meeting ended with plan to hold such a school in Dharavi area also in the near future.
