State organised sectarian violence in Orissa
Dear Sir,
I am writing to thank you for the article entitled `Unite against state organised sectarian violence in Orissa’ in the October 16-31, 2008 issue of People's Voice. The article highlights the fact that this tragedy, just like so many others is the making of the ruling circles. It is in keeping with the age old colonial tradition of `divide and rule’. The article clearly shows that various political parties have been involved in activities of inflaming passions and trying to create vote-banks amongst the population of Orissa. It is precisely this kind of activity that time and again leads to a conflagaration. While there are many laws on the books which render such activities cognizable offences, the reality in India is that the state and its organs abet such activities. So there is no question of the guilty being brought to book under the circumstances. One cannot help noticing that the polarization of tribal population along this or that set of lines is accelerating in precisely those parts of the country where tribal lands contain vast natural resources and minerals which the big Indian bourgeoisie as well as the international bourgeoisie wants to exploit for their enrichment.
Sincerely,
A. Narayan
