Third Anniversary of the Gruesome Attack on Honda Workers

On 25 March 2008 hundreds of workers of Honda Motor and Scooter Company (HMSC) and workers and unions from various districts in Haryana participated in a militant public meeting at the Secretariat in Gurgaon on the occasion of the third anniversary of the gruesome attack on Honda Workers. The day was observed as Unity Day with great enthusiasm and militant spirit.

Com Anil of AITUC presided over the public meeting. The meeting began with rendering of Vande Mataram by Young Star Club from Delhi. Com Suresh Gaud, President of Honda Motor and Scooter India Employees Union recalled that three years back on this same day and spot workers of Honda Company were brutally attacked. This attack is now been compared with the Jalianwala Baug massacre. Since then is has been resolved by the workers to observe this day as Unity day. Following this incident workers have won a few victories in their struggle for their rights, like unions consisting of both regular and contract workers have been formed in Honda and other factories.  He said that government and the management of this company work on behalf of the capitalists and appealed to the workers to come on to the streets to fight for their rights.

AITUC President Com. G L Dhar, Secretary Com. Suchdev, Com. Bhim Sen Prabhakar, Rajbir Chahal of Rewadi Mazdoor Parishad, CITU State Secretary Satbir Singh addressed the gathering. Other speakers included Secretary of Honda Motor and Scooter India Employees Union Vinod Tiwari, General Secretary Harjit Singh, Govind Behra, Pankaj Aire, who appreciated the organizing of Unity Day and said that the struggle is going to intensify in coming days and all workers must be prepared for this so that we can put an end to the exploitation of the workers.

Speaking on behalf of Lok Raj Sangathan Santosh Kumar said that the UPA government has intensified its attacks on the workers, peasants, women and youth. More than 1.5 lakh farmers have committed suicide as a result of the policy of globalization through privatization and liberalization. The attacks on rights of the workers are taking place incessantly and prices of essential commodities are sky rocketing. The UPA government won the vote of confidence and saved their government through corruption and horse-trading. The big capitalists of our country have grown so big that they are buying over companies within the country and abroad. The rich are getting richer, while poor are being pushed to greater poverty. If we want to change the situation, we will have to fight for lokraj, i.e., power in the hands of the people.

He recalled that 100 years ago the working class of Mumbai had organized a mass political strike against the arrest and sentencing of Lokmanya Tilak. Lakhs of workers came on to the street against the colonial rule. The working class of this country has always been at the forefront of the struggle against anti-people and anti-national policies of the rulers.

At the conclusion of the programme a street play “60 saal baad” (After 60 years) was staged, depicting the reality of last 60 years of so called  independence.
