Comdemn the massacre of people in Rajasthan
As we go to the press, People's Voice has received the news that at least seventeen people have been killed and several injured in police firing in Rajasthan’s Dausa, Karauli and Bundi districts on May 29, 2007. The army has been deployed in various areas of Rajasthan. People's Voice condemns the Rajasthan government for the reign of terror on the people.
According to reports, protestors from Gurjar Action Committee had given notice of a “chakka jam” in support of their long standing demands that the community be shifted from OBC to ST category. They blocked traffic along parts of Jaipur-Agra, Jaipur-Ajmer-Jodhpur and Jaipur-Bundi-Sawai Madhopur highways as part of their ‘chakka-jam’ agitation. Whatever be the case, the Rajasthan government had the duty to discuss the concerns of the protesting people. Instead, it chose to declare Section 144 and break the “chakka jam” with brutal terror. The result was a massacre of ordinary people, which follows many similar massacres in Rajasthan under the present regime beginning with the massacre of peasants in Tonk in 2004.
