Terrorist activities of US imperialism in Venezuela

Towards the end of August, detonators and cables used for explosives were discovered in a cargo meant for the US embassy in Venezuela. The dispatch was found in an air freight consignment of 20 crates which was supposed to enjoy diplomatic exemption from checking.

The freight was discovered only a few days after some conspirators linked to the 2004 attempt to commit sabotage and assassinate political leaders, including President Hugo Chávez, had escaped from prison.

The present government of Venezuela is a major thorn in the flesh for the US imperialists. It has shown in no uncertain terms that it will stand up to oppose interference by them in the affairs of their country and the region. It was also one of the governments which protested strongly against the US – backed Israeli aggression in Palestine and Lebanon, and had even recalled its ambassador from Israel to register its disapproval. Washington has made no secret of its intention to overthrow the democratically elected president of Venezuela. To this end it has been openly financing various sections of the big capitalist dominated opposition groups, in blatant violation of the norms between sovereign countries which explicitly eschew such interference in the internal affairs of another country. The discovery of explosives in the US diplomatic cargo shows that the US imperialists are in addition trying to organise terrorist activities in Venezuela.

US imperialism has a long history of organising terrorist activities especially in South America. It has organised a number of coups, and installed dictators like Pinochet to carry out its bidding. It has sought repeatedly, and by its own admission, to get rid of leaders like Cuba's Fidel Castro, through so-called “dirty tricks”. This shows up the hypocrisy of the current US-led “war against terror”.

The provocative activities of the US against Venezuela and other countries not only deserve to be severely condemned, they should also reinforce the peoples’ resolve to step up the fight against this marauding superpower in order to safeguard their freedom and sovereignty.
