Victory to the valiant fighters against the US-Israel imperialist aggressors!

On August 12, the UN Security Council passed a resolution calling for ceasefire between Israel and the Hezbollah in Lebanon. This came after over three weeks of relentless bombing of Lebanon and massacres by the Israeli forces in which over a thousand people, mostly civilians, were killed and almost one million people were displaced from their homes. During those three weeks, the US imperialist backers of the Israeli aggression had vetoed or threatened to veto several previous attempts at passing a resolution calling for a cease fire.

This resolution is a far cry from what people all over the world have been insistently demanding. It merely calls for "a full cessation of hostilities", and “UN and Lebanese troops to replace Israeli forces in southern Lebanon”. The resolution equates the Israeli aggressor, which has set a new standard in war crimes with its indiscriminate bombings and mass murder of civilians, with the Hezbollah, thereby implicitly justifying the Israeli aggression. Furthermore, what it actually aims to do is to provide a screen behind which the imperialists can disarm the Lebanese people’s fighting forces and eliminate their resistance, thereby paving the way for further Israeli occupation. This can be seen in the fact that even after the formal acceptance of the ceasefire, Israeli forces have continued to bomb Lebanon with impunity. The foreign minister of Qatar, which currently sits on the UN Security Council, has clearly pointed out that the resolution contained imbalances in favour of Israel, the aggressor. The latest developments show how the US imperialists and the Israeli state work together to crush the struggle of the Palestinian and other peoples and violate national sovereignty with impunity. While Israel carries out the actual aggression, it is financed and backed to the hilt by US imperialism, which uses its veto power in the UN and strong arm tactics to ensure that Israel is free to do whatever it wants.

However, the fierce resistance of the Lebanese patriots has put a spoke in the plans of the US-Israeli imperialist alliance. The Israeli military chief who, at the beginning of the conflict, had arrogantly claimed that Israel would “put Lebanon back by twenty years”, has publicly admitted that “there were failings” in the conflict with the Hezbollah. Both the stated aims of the Israeli state, namely, securing the release of their soldiers who had been captured and ridding South Lebanon of the influence of the Hezbollah, could not be met. The prestige of the fighters resisting Israeli aggression has gone up immensely, especially among the people of the region, as a result of their determined and tenacious struggle.

Going by history, the proposed UN force is hardly likely to be a deterrent power to stop further invasions and aggression by Israel. The big powers have, in the past, used Special Forces to carry out communal massacres and impose civil war, as they did in Lebanon from 1975 to 1990. The only force capable of defending the sovereignty of Lebanon and ensuring security for its people is the united resistance of the Lebanese people themselves.

People's Voice condemns the reprehensible activities of Israel, US and the big powers and calls upon the workers and freedom–loving people of India to support the just struggles of the Lebanese and Arab peoples.
