The US is trying might and main to get the other members of the UN Security Council to agree to impose sanctions against Iran for its failure to stop its nuclear program. However, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of the UN has severely criticised US attempts to ‘prove’ that Iran’s nuclear program was geared towards making nuclear weapons, terming them as ‘outrageous and dishonest’

A letter addressed to the chairman of the US House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence signed by a senior director of the IAEA has pointed out factual errors in the US position. It may be recalled that similar lies were spread about the erstwhile government of Iraq and its programs to develop ‘weapons of mass destruction’ including biological and nuclear weapons, before the 2003 invasion of Iraq. These lies were spread precisely to obtain public approval for carrying out war and killing purely in the strategic interests of the imperialists. History seems to be repeating itself again, but this time the people are much more skeptical about claims made by the US imperialists.
